2025 SKNFA DIVISION 1 LEAGUE ACTION HEATS UP

The 2025 SKNFA Division 1 League season is intensifying as the top four teams battle for the two coveted promotion spots to the Premier League. Honda Newtown United have reclaimed the top spot following a strong rebound after last week’s setback against TGE Dieppe Bay Eagles. On Tuesday, April 8, at Warner Park, the East Basseterre side delivered a commanding performance, defeating SKELEC Garden Hotspurs to surge back to the top of the standings. Goals from Navaldo Champagne in the 3rd minute and Carlos Bertie in the 30th minute sealed the 2-0 victory.

Newtown goalkeeper Meneliek Gumbs emphasized the importance of the win, noting how crucial it was for the team’s momentum in the promotion race. “It’s very important to get three points, to reach back to the top of the table and to keep the momentum going for us and also the community and to keep the love and to keep the positive energy in the community,” Gumbs said. “We just got to stick together and keep going and stay focused, stay focused, especially to the coach man’s game plan and always keep that momentum and keep aiming for three points.”

Garden Hotspurs’ coach Stephen Clarke expressed disappointment in the result but remains optimistic. He believes the team is still well within reach of Premier League promotion. “We started the game a little flat, (Newtown had) a little more energy than us. Literally we made two mistakes. We gifted them two goals, we made two mistakes and that was the result in the game,” he said. “We created chances, didn’t finish the chances and tough luck but that still takes time. The players did come out second half and play a much better game and dominate much more the game.”
