Newtown, St. Peters Nab Wins on Sunday
Former Premier League champions S-Krave Newtown United stamped their authority for the first time in round two with an effortless 3 – 1 victory over last year’s finalists SOL IAS Conaree F.C. in Sunday’s action of the SKNFA National Bank Premier League at the St. Mary’s Park in Cayon. Conaree got on the score sheet first with a goal from Kadeen Lewis in the 23rd minute, only for Rohan Joseph to equalize in the 37th minute. In the second half both teams failed to create any dangerous opportunities, but somehow Newtown gained another goal through an own goal from Dequan Wattley of Conaree in the 68th minute.
Former Conaree player, who returned to Newtown in the off season, Orlando ‘Ack’ Mitcham made sure the victory was Newtown’s with a lob kick into the back of the net after receiving a long pass from new goal keeper Zeleon Morton. Out of respect for his old team, Mitcham’s goal celebration was muted, but his team mates were delirious.
Newtown player Ahmal Mills said the strategy was to play the Newtown way and keep Conaree at bay. “The strategy was to push around the ball, play Newtown Football and execute what the coach put on the board to do as we played against Conaree. We did a very good job because as you can see we got the three points—much needed three points because we were in a little drought, drawing our last two games, so congrats to the guys on this win,” Mills said. He said the two drawn matches prior to Sunday’s victory was very frustrating. “We had opportunities and we threw them away time after time,” he conceded.
