NEWTOWN WOMEN WIN INAUGURAL PRESIDENT’S CUP

It took a second half extra time goal from Honda Newtown United women to seal the inaugural Elvis Brown Women’s League President’s Cup title, defeating MFCR Old Road United Lady Jets 2-1 in the finals on Thursday April 25 at Warner Park. Newtown led 1-0 from a 45th minute Kazyq Boyles strike. But in the dying moments of regulation time, Old Road earned a penalty which was converted by Dalencia Roberts, to force the match into extra time. After several missed chances, Newtown’s striker Katelyn Forbes finally scored a stunner in the second half of extra time to give Newtown the go-ahead goal and the victory. The match was broadcast live on the SKNFA online platforms and TVC Channel 40 on The Cable.

After the match, team physio Alexis Joseph, said the fitness of his players played a crucial role in the victory. “I think the game was a well-played game. The game could have gone (either way) but Newtown went out and executed,” Joseph said. “I noticed that the Old road team wasn’t fit enough to run the extra thirty mins and that’s where we overcame.” He said this victory means a lot and is a good preparation for the Women’s League. “It only means we get stronger and better,” he said.  With the end of the 2024 of the President’s Cup, attention will now be on the 2024 Elvis Star Browne Women’s League.
