SKNFA LIME Star Browne Women’s League off to a tremendous start!

Yesterday(6th) May, LIME Grounds came alive with excitement and jubilation as it marked the historic opening of the SKNFA LIME Star Browne Women’s League. The opening ceremony was attended by the Governor General, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, management members of the SKNFA including the president and both vice presidents, the wife of the late Elvis Star Browne, ministers of government, participants and many supporters. From the inception, it was clear that this league would be something interesting. After the speeches and march pass the ladies went back to their camps to gear up for the soccerama.

The captains gathered to draw for their match ups. In the end it was to be St. Pauls versus St. Peters Blue Angels, Newtown United versus St. Thomas/Trinity Strikers and Village versus Cayon. In the first match, St. Peters Blue Angels were able to outscore St. Pauls by three goals to nil and advanced to the second round of play.

Newtown United then came up against Strikers and ball possession was mostly in Newtown’s favour. At the end of the game Newtown had beaten Strikers four goals to nil and they also advance to the next round. Then Village superstars came up against Cayon and this was a very exciting match. At the end of the first half Village had scored one goal and seemed to be on their way to the next round. In the dying moments of the game however, Cayon managed to squeeze one past the Village goalkeeper which meant that they would have to go to penalty kicks.

The penalty shooters were absolutely fantastic and only one person from each team had missed, which meant that the game was still tied. Then they called on their two extra players, both goalkeepers scored and both players missed! What an exciting match up. The final result had to be determined by a toss of the coin as there were no more players left to kick. In the end it was Cayon who came out victorious and advanced to the next round.

After another draw it was St. Peters Blue Angels who came up against Newtown and Cayon would receive a bye to the final round. At the end of the first half the game was tied at nil and the match up was pretty even. Then in the dying moments Newtown managed to score two goals marking their victory and securing their place in the finals.

In the final match of the day Newtown and Cayon faced off for the championship. At the end of the first half neither of the teams had scored. In the second half Newtown scored three goals to declare themselves the winners. Cayon was unable to score and they would have to settle for second place.

The official results were: 1st place-Newtown United, 2nd place- Cayon, 3rd place- St. Peters Blue Angels. The ladies were absolutely amazing and their games were very exciting. The Governor General couldn’t even leave the ground as he was floored by the performances. We are very proud of our ladies and we cannot wait for the league games to begin. Congratulations ladies, your time is now!
