WILLIAMS’ LATE WINNER SEALS COMEBACK VICTORY FOR SUGAR BOYZ
ST. PETERS–Tiquanny Williams scored twice, including a dramatic 89th-minute free-kick winner, as St. Kitts and Nevis came from behind to defeat Bonaire 2-1 in their Concacaf Nations League League B Group C encounter at the National Bank Group (NBG) Technical Center.
Bonaire took an early lead in the seventh minute when Berry Sonnenschein found the back of the net with a left-footed effort from outside the penalty area. The Sugar Boyz responded strongly, with Williams bringing St. Kitts and Nevis level in the 36th minute with a right-footed strike. With the match heading toward its conclusion, Williams completed the comeback in spectacular fashion, converting a free kick in the 89th minute to secure all three points for the home side.
Reflecting on the victory, Williams expressed his appreciation to the supporters who turned out to back the team. “First of all, I want to say thanks to the fans for coming out. My motive was to just go out and make the fans and my family proud. To win at home was my biggest accomplishment.” Williams said the team remained united after falling behind early in the match and continued to believe in the game plan.
“The team was sticking together, sticking to the game plan. We were encouraging each other not to give up. We got a game to win. We were just pushing and pushing to get back to the equaliser.” Williams also explained the instinctive play that led to his first goal.
“That’s my playing style. I like pressing and running around the ball. I saw the keeper was playing around, so I pressured him. It just so happened that he left the ball in my reach, so I went for it.” The forward said the team continued to press for a winning goal, with the opportunity ultimately falling to him. “We were also pushing for the go-ahead goal. It so happened that it was me at the end of it.”
Scoring twice in front of the home supporters was a particularly special moment for Williams, who said performing for the home crowd had been a personal ambition. “It’s a great feeling to be at home and everybody looking to me to perform. For me, it was one of my dreams to score in front of the home crowd.”
The 2-1 victory gives St. Kitts and Nevis a winning start to its home campaign in the 2026/27 Concacaf Nations League, with the Sugar Boyz continuing their League B Group C campaign against Grenada on September 28 at the NBG Technical Center.
